concrete, Police Club Happy Valley-alterations and additions, P.W.D. Offices-sundry alterations and provision of drawing benches in Survey Block, Volunteer Headquarters—grills, ventilators etc. to Company Offices, Kennedy Town Opium Shed --alterations and renovations for Sanitary Department, altera- tions and additions to the Chair and Ricksha Shelter, Victoria Gap.

Water storage tanks were installed under this heading at the following buildings:-Peak School, 361 The Peak, 463 The Peak, 465 The Peak, 406 Severn Road. Wanchai School. Gap Road School, Junior Technical School, Central Magistracy, Queen's College, Sisters' Quarters G.C.H., Sisters' Quarters K.T. Hospital, Colonial Secretariat.

Improvements and additions to electric lighting were carried out in forty-six buildings: the total number of points involved was 231. The lightning conductors at Nos. 297 and 372 The Peak were removed and refixed. Alarm and telephone extension bells were installed in Mental Hospital. Education Department, Public Works Department and Central Fire Station. One telephone was installed in the Buildings Ordinance Office, Public Works Department.

48. Maintenance of Roads and Bridges in City and Improve- ments of Roads & Bridges in City. The surfaces of approximate- ly seventy one miles of roads were generally maintained in a satisfactory manner. Connaught Road West (Eastern Street to Ping On Wharf) was laid with 6" cement concrete foundation to receive granite setts and asphaltic sand carpeting. The wall on Inland Lot 59, section A, Caine Road (below Roman Catholic Cathedral) was taken down and rebuilt to new alignment. Experimental sections of "Taramac" were laid and obtained good results.

The following figures show the extent of the operations carried out at the Government Quarry. Tsat Tse Mui, during the year-A total quantity of 82,914 cubic yards of various grades of stone was passed through crushers, of which 5,701 cubic yards were made into tar macadam, 1,334 cubic yards into sand carpeting and 25,879 cubic yards were delivered to various works as the material came from crushers. 27,725 granolithic paving slabs for use on footways, 31 reinforced concrete standards for railings, 36 wooden notice boards, 29 garden seats, 1 sentry box and 1 Rubber Squeegee were provided.

49. Maintenance of and Improvements to Roads and Bridges Outside City.-The road surfaces of approximately ninety miles of roads were generally maintained in a satisfactory manner. A portion of Stubbs Road (between Peak Hotel and Jardine's Corner) was regraded. Dangerous bends on Tai Hang Road were improved.

50. Maintenance of Telephones including all cables.-The whole system of communications, including main and sub exchanges, submarine and land cables and aerial routes, telegraph lines and instruments, and office intercommunicating systems, was maintained in good order. Alterations and improvements were effected to various existing lines.

51. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs, etc.—The storm water drains, and trained nullahs generally were cleansed, repaired and maintained in good condition, the open nullahs and channels in the City of Victoria and in the Shaukiwan district being cleansed by the Sanitary Department. The automatic flushing tanks were operated during periods of low tide. Sand deposits were cleared as they occurred. The septic tanks at Lugard Road, Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay, near R.B.L. 137, Pokfulam Road, and at F.L's. 29 and 30. Pokfulam, were periodically sludged. All metal work in connection with the various drainage systems was inspected, and, where found necessary, repaired and tarred. Many defective traps, gullies, gratings, etc., were renewed, and a number of old disused drains of various sizes and types destroyed and filled in.
